Gratitude Smoothie – A Superfood Banana “Milk” Shake

This Superfood Smoothie tastes like a really good banana milkshake with a wonderfully malty accent. So, I guess you could say it’s a like a malted milkshake with banana. Except there’s no dairy, only superfoods. It’s energizing and filling enough to work as a breakfast-on-the-go. I make my own nut milk because it’s much less expensive than buying an almond, coconut, or other nut milk. And double bonus: it’s easy to make, and it tastes so much better than any store bought milk. To make your own nut milk, use whichever nut you like most. I’ve made both cashew and Brazil nut milks this week. I sprout the Brazil nuts overnight but with raw cashews I don’t bother. Put a cup of raw nuts in a blender or food processor with 4 cups filtered water, a pinch of good sea salt, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, and dash of cinnamon, blend until smooth, about a minute on high. Enjoy in smoothies, coffee – this milk is terrific frothed, chia puddings, or sweet porridges with dried and fresh fruit.

Notes
  1. Maca powder is serious superfood with a wonderful malty flavor. I love it in vegan desserts and in smoothies. It's an adaptogen, and though expensive, one small bag will last you a while. Maca is know for helping to balance hormones and reverse hypothyroidism. It is an endocrine adaptogen, which means it doesn't contain any hormones, but rather has the nutrients necessary to support normal hormone production. Hemp seeds are high in protein, fiber, and they are exceptionally rich in two essential fatty acids, linoleic acid (Omega 6) and alpha-linolenic acid (Omega 3). They are a great addition to porridges, smoothies, and energy bites.
