SuperGreen Adaptogen Smoothie for Beautiful Skin

This smoothie has it all going on. Adaptogens, spirulina, greens, berries, citrus and hemp seeds. All of which help your skin glow with a natural radiance, from the inside out. Not only does this smoothie energize you, it also keeps the microbiota in your gut happy. 

What are adaptogens? A unique group of plants (herbs and roots) that improve the health of your adrenal system, which is in charge of managing your body’s hormonal response to stress. They go where they’re needed; they “adapt” their function according to your body’s specific needs.  And, they help strengthen the body’s response to stress and lessen the effects of stress and fatigue on the body. Though subtle, the effects are real and undeniable. Adaptogens can mitigate the effects of stress on your skin. We’ve all seen what stress from chronic inflammation can do to the skin. Fine lines, breakouts, rashes, puffiness, premature aging… all from emotional, physical, and environmental stressors. 

The adaptogens I use in this smoothie are ashwagandha and maca root powder. Ashwagandha is very often used in Ayurvedic healing because it helps balance and restore the body. Maca, one of my favorites for it’s butterscotch-like taste, energizes you, reduces stress hormones, and nourishes. And, since one of the goals of this smoothie is to encourage glowing, ageless skin, both these adaptogens really help with that. So does the spirulina I add to the smoothie. Spriulina increases skin metabolism, neutralizing free radicals and other toxins that cause premature signs of aging. Loaded with vitamins A, B-12, and E, spirulina can improve rough, tired-looking skin, giving you a more radiant complexion. It’s also high in protein and crazy good for you. The hempseeds are also high in protein, and they have plenty of good, plant-based fat.

I add citrus to this smoothie for the taste and because I find citrus brightens the skin. Berries for flavor and for the antioxidant boost. And, greens because they make our ageless world go round.

Ingredients
  1. 1 teaspoon spirulina powder
  2. 2 teaspoon maca root powder
  3. 1 teaspoon ashwagandha powder
  4. 3 tablespoons hempseeds
  5. 1 orange, peeled, segmented
  6. 1 lemon, peeled, diced
  7. 1 1/2 cup berries
  8. 1 1/2 cup greens (spinach, dandelion, kale, chard...)
  9. 1 sprig of mint or parsley
  10. Filtered water
  11. Ice
Instructions
  1. Add the adaptogens, hempseeds, lemon, and orange to the blender with water to cover, about 1 cup. Blend together. Add the greens, fresh herbs, and berries. Blend until smooth. Add as much ice as desired. If needed, add water. Blend and serve.
Notes
  1. All the adaptogens can be purchased online. Just make sure you buy the best, highest quality ones you can find. With adaptogens and spirulina quality counts. You can also substitute chlorella for spirulina. If you have access to dandelion greens grown in organic soil, try them, they're really high in phytonutrients.
