Superfood Smoothie

An energizing, delicious, Superfood Green Smoothie that will power you through your day and keep you looking and feeling ageless.

This smoothie is a superfood powerhouse. It’s also creamy, mildly sweet, filling, and delicious. It’s perfect for an afternoon snack or for breakfast. It has kale, but the real stars are the added maca powder, bee pollen, and hemp seeds. These are the superfoods we’re focusing on today. Superfoods are nutrient superstars that pack large doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals.

Maca

Maca is a nutritionally dense adaptogenic (helps you adapt and deal with stress) superfood that contains high amounts of minerals, vitamins, enzymes and all of the essential amino acids. It helps us deal with stress by countering the negative effects of tension and anxiety while boosting the endocrine system. This root is rich in B vitamins, and maca is a vegetarian source of B-12.  In short, maca delivers energy, mental stamina, and hormonal balance. Macy’s nutty, malty, and complex caramel flavor complements the other superfoods in this smoothie. 

Bee Pollen

I add bee pollen to this smoothie because it brings sweetness, and it’s good for you. Skip it if you’re vegan. I’ll paraphrase Royden Brown in his book “Bee Hive Product Bible” about the nutrient rich bee pollen. It contains all essential amino acids, 28 minerals (including calcium, magnesium and iron), 12 vitamins (including vitamins B, C, E and D), 11 enzymes and coenzymes, 11 carbohydrates and 14 beneficial fatty acids. These are antioxidants that boost the immune system and help keep us ageless.

Hemp seeds

Hemp seeds give you a balanced ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, proteins, vitamin A, E and D, and many B vitamins, not to mention sodium, calcium, dietary fiber and iron. If you haven’t tried hemp seeds or hemp oil, do. The taste is lovely. Mild and nutty, and it’s really anti-inflammatory. 

Superfood Green Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 2 cups chopped kale
  • 1 banana peeled, chopped
  • 2 cara cara or blood oranges peeled, cut into segments
  • ½ cup unsweetened almond milk or a nut milk of your choice, brazil nut milk is a good option
  • 2 tablespoons hemp seeds
  • 1 tablespoon bee pollen
  • 2 teaspoons maca powder
  • Filtered water about 1 cup
  • Ice about 1 cup

Instructions

  1. Add all the ingredients to the blender, with barely enough water to cover. (You want a creamy smoothie, not a watery thin one.)
  2. Blend until smooth.
  3. Add the almond milk and ice. Blend for another 20 seconds or so.
  4. Serve in 2 big glasses.
