Smoothie with it all: adaptogens (ashwagandha & maca), spirulina, greens, berries, citrus and hemp seeds

SuperGreen smoothie helps your skin glow with a natural radiance, from the inside out. Not only does this smoothie energize you, it also keeps the microbiota in your gut happy.

What are adaptogens?

A unique group of plants (herbs and roots) that improve the health of your adrenal system, which is in charge of managing your body’s hormonal response to stress. They go where they’re needed; they “adapt” their function according to your body’s specific needs.  And, they help strengthen the body’s response to stress and lessen the effects of stress and fatigue on the body. Though subtle, the effects are real and undeniable. Adaptogens can mitigate the effects of stress on your skin. We’ve all seen what stress from chronic inflammation can do to the skin. Fine lines, breakouts, rashes, puffiness, premature aging… all from emotional, physical, and environmental stressors.

Ashwaghanda, Spirulina, and Maca

Ashwagandha is very often used in Ayurvedic healing because it helps balance and restore the body. Maca, one of my favorites for it’s butterscotch-like taste, energizes you, reduces stress hormones, and nourishes. Spriulina increases skin metabolism, neutralizing free radicals and other toxins that cause premature signs of aging. Loaded with vitamins A, B-12, and E, spirulina can improve rough, tired-looking skin, giving you a more radiant complexion.

SuperGreen Adaptogen Smoothie

  • Author: Tania Van Pelt
  • Total Time: 8 minutes
  • Yield: 2 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 teaspoon spirulina powder
  • 2 teaspoon maca root powder
  • 1 teaspoon ashwagandha powder
  • 3 tablespoons hempseeds
  • 1 orange (peeled, segmented)
  • 1 lemon (peeled, diced)
  • 1½ cup berries
  • 1½ cup greens (spinach, dandelion, kale, chard…)
  • 1 sprig of mint or parsley
  • Filtered water
  • Ice

Instructions

  1. Add the adaptogens, hempseeds, lemon, and orange to the blender with water to cover, about 1 cup. Blend together. Add the greens, fresh herbs, and berries. Blend until smooth. Add as much ice as desired. If needed, add water. Blend and serve.

Notes

All the adaptogens can be purchased online. Just make sure you buy the best, highest quality ones you can find. With adaptogens and spirulina quality counts. You can also substitute chlorella for spirulina. If you have access to dandelion greens grown in organic soil, try them, they’re really high in phytonutrients.
